Big ups to our man DJ SPS for being chosen to appear on DJ Clue’s Who’s the DJ online reality show. So far only 4 of the 15 DJ’s have been announced, and with SPS holding the current USA DMC Supremecy Championship title look for him to dominate the competition. Here’s a video about SPS and some text from the DJ Clue site.
Who’s the Dj selects 15 DJs from worldwide auditions to battle it out for the title of Next Top DJ in the world. “Who’s the DJ? gives everyday DJs the once in a lifetime opportunity to take their careers to the next level,” says an enthusiastic DJ Clue.
Like your everyday reality show, there will be challenges to access skills, putting the contestants under the “disc jockey microscope” to ultimately expose their strengths and weaknesses.
With DJ Clue at the helm, celebrity guests are sure to make their way on screen to help keep and cut contestants. In the end, the winner becomes Clue’s opening DJ, for everything from all-star parties to celebrity birthdays. Great way to get in the door!

Wreck by Swamburger and DJ SPS

Here’s a little sample of what’s to come from us ladies and fellas over here at Second Subject Recordings. This banger is from the mind of Swamburger and the fingertips of DJ SPS. Swam made the beat using a MPC and then DJ SPS stopped in to the Milk District lab to lay his scratch down just before heading over to Europe for a slew of shows. Look for him in Switzerland for the next few weeks including an April 26th show with another member of the 2nd Sub Crew, Mauikai, at the Mombosa Island Bar, in Lausanne, Switzerland.

First coverage for 2nd Sub in This Little Underground
Second Subject has been announced by Bao Le-Huu in his section of the Orlando Weekly, “This Little Underground.” Le-Huu also reviewed S.K.I.P.’s performance from April 7th, at the Social.
Excerpt:
The newest sprout in the field of local labels is Second Subject Recordings (secondsubject.com). The fact that it’s founder is Swamburger – the MC of Solillaquists of Sound and a significant scene-builder in his own right – makes it a particularly auspicious entry. Beyond just hip-hop or even music, the roster includes photographers, writers and fine artists alongside musical acts like DJ SPS, S.K.I.P., Kaleigh Baker and Adeem (of Glue). Welcome to the mix. We’re listening.
Speaking of Swamburger, his big birthday bash (April 7th, the Social) was a very local affair abuzz with music, art and culture. The bill featured a re-emerging of sorts for local backpacker S.K.I.P., who performed this time with an ace rhythm section anchored solidly by the Oaks‘ Matthew Antolick. It wasn’t the first time the rapper’s played with a live band – he’s had full-band aspirations for his musical vision for a long time now – but the set showed that he has outgrown the basic plug-in-and-rap-over MC show, possible for good, in itself a very positive development. This performance saw him manning more instruments in pursuit of greater texture. Moreover, some different flavors, like dub and reggae, have entered his vocabulary, giving needed depth and maturity to his game. All these signs make his nearly complete new album (Until the Very End) that much more of an intriguing release.

Beef joins Second Subject
Bottom line is Beef has been on a quest, exploring a musical universe in search of a universal sound. Or rather, a real world version of his sonic vision. His journey began with years of formal musical training, with a sudden detour from the home stretch that led directly to the streets of Orlando where a serious jones for funk led to that all consuming quest.
Beef has worked with Swam on several previous projects and joining Second Subject seemed like the next logical step in the quest for good music. With new music already in progress expect an instant impact on 2nd Sub from Beef including at least one track on the first Second Subject Comp CD due out in May.
Until then, you can check out Beef Wellington at his website, tastebeef.com, or live around the Orlando area playing improvised sets with fellow Intelligence Officer, Divinci. Their next performance is on April 25th at Firestone with a lineup that includes Grand Master Flash as well as Second Sub member Am-I-Am.
Second Subject is Coming for Ya! Look out for Recess passes soon!

S.K.I.P.'s of Second Subject Records newest musical release
Last night was Swamburger’s Bday party at Expo-Tees at the Social, downtown Orlando FL. It was a great turn out. Saw some new faces, and a lot of the returning supporters. B-Side Artists were out in force, (Palin, Julsan, Jacob, Lemus). S.K.I.P. had the first set and killed it. Red vs. Blue was my personal favorite track, but the crowd was diggin all the songs he performed. Much props to S.K.I.P. for bringing out the megaphone, Melodica, and about 7 distortion pedals that he masterfully mixed in to the music. His new album, “Until the Very End” is almost done, and let me tell you, it won’t disappoint.
After S.K.I.P.’s set Divinci and Beef Wellington got on stage and played a pretty impressive improvised set. The bass was low and the heads were bobbin. You gotta respect a man that can play a mpc with his face while keeping beat on two other mpcs with his hands. Hot Damn!
If you missed the night, I’m sure you will be able to see some pics and video from it soon. I’ve never seen so many cameras at an Expo-Tees event. Hopefully everyone there will post their footy online for us all to check out. We’ll keep you posted..
Speaking of paparazzi, S.K.I.P. and Swam announced the start of the “Spot the Dot” contest, where fans are encouraged to snap a photo with us whenever they see one of us from Second Subject wearing the exclusive “big red REC logo” shirt and to put it up online somewhere and tag us!! You may be saying to yourself, “wait, thats free promotion, F those fools, they gotta work for their chedda!” but in return we will give you free stuff too. Look forward to free posters, stickers, cds, buttons, tickets, and more.
